The year was 1959...

From the "Time Clock" of Time Magazine: American Express credit cards have been issued to 500,000 vs. 940,000 who hold Diners' Club cards ... United Air Lines almost doubled its net earnings in 1958 to record $14,300,802 ... Huge Uranium Find, perhaps biggest in US made in Wyoming's Shirley Basin area shared by Utah Construction Co., Tidewater Oil Co., Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc.  Reserves there total 1,500,000 to 4,000,000 tons of high-grade ore (.8% uranium oxide), but most of it will not be mined for a long while because market is glutted ... 5% Wage Boost will go to some 500,000 of oil industry's workers and salaried employees.  Hike lifts average hourly pay of refinery workers from $2.71 to $2.84 1/2 ... Steel output hit a 15-month high of 2,111,000 tons weekly ... Wide use of aluminum will cut the overall weight of 1959 Fords, Chevys and Plymouths to about 2,500 pounds, which in turn means up to 25 miles per gallon of gas - an economy factor that will get more important as gasoline taxes go up ... In Cinema - A Night To Remember, the RMS Titanic's voyage to disaster, with all the triumphs and hysterics reported in Walter Lord's 1956 bestseller!
