Have you ever tried to contact a successful DJ and tell him...well,
anything? These people live exciting, complicated lives, folks. So, DJ Chris
at Trikkx, here’s your official notification: You’re number one in the Twin
Cities for 2006! Along with your award goes a year’s subscription to
The Saturday Evening Post to start in 2030 and a preneed supply of Tums.
But let’s not worry about the future. For now, you’re slick and
energetic, and you’ve got the enviable talent of pleasing even the most
finicky party people of any vintage. So, get in that state-of-the-art
booth, and make the magic happen. — RD

In a downloadable, sound-bite-happy world, instant gratification simply
takes too long. But there’s more to life than increasing its speed. So,
Lavender’s annual survey of all things fabulous will help you take a few
minutes to appreciate the queer and queer-friendly people, places,
organizations, and events that make the Twin Cities our kind of towns—and
yours. Whether you’re naughty or nice, it’s a list you’ll want to check
twice.
I did it -
on May 2, 2006, I sent off a CD Sampler and DVD Video introducing myself to
Ellen DeGeneres! Her DJ, Tony is
leaving, and she needs a replacement! Now I am guessing my chances are
slim, but you have to take the risk. Based on a rerun of Mary Tyler
Moore I watched just last night, events happen when you least expect them to
(Episode 71, Season 3 "Put on a Happy Face"). Ok, obviously it was a
rerun of Mary Tyler Moore, it went off the air in 1977 (click
for more).
UPDATE: Got the "thank you"
letter --- so I won't be relocating to Hollywood (but it was nice of them to
send the letter.
This Time, The Rumors are True - Trikkx Officially Closed on January 28, 2007
Trikkx, (and
formerly Rumours), have been part of my life since 1994, so the closing was a rather emotional one. The bar
was a second home to many - a place
where they could be "themselves" and hang their hat. Chocked full of
stories of "first love", and "coming out", and sadly, a place where we remember
those lost to the devastation known as AIDS. The space and the people are
full of life, and love. The walls and the space were be silenced at the
end of January 2007. It might be easy to simply call it the "end of an
era". Indeed it is. And we'll all survive. Gloria Gaynor
taught us that. But for now, some are still mourning the loss. The loss of a
place where you were safe, where friends and lovers were made. A place we
indeed called home. It's not like we lost another chain restaurant or
retail mega-store, we lost a part of our lives as a community. A
place like this can not and will never be again! It's a once in a lifetime
experience. Maybe we should be lucky we survived this long? No, it
wasn't luck. It was the community and the people who supported it, who
made it come to life, and who gave it life. And for me, a place I called
home too. THANK YOU for all the support, all the "shoulders to cry on",
and one amazing Saturday night, January 27 - a bitter-sweet career high for me.
Together, we closed the night, for it was our "Last Dance". About 3 hours
of video were recorded that night, and I am compiling it on DVD. It's now
complete. You can also see clips online at
www.trikkx.com.
You'll notice I
have a wide taste in music genres and styles. From Top 40-Urban tracks (50
Cent, Sean Paul) to Mainstream Dance (Madonna, Cyndi Lauper) to Euro (Regi,
Darude, Tiesto). I like to mix it up. Just take a look at the list
of all-time favorites.
One thing unique
about my style, is that I usually close the night, and or a CD mix with
something slow and original, a standard, a classic. Some examples include
Linda Eder, Michael Buble, and Bird York. I think it "closes" the venue,
or the mix rather gently. Now if the clock is ticking down to the wire, as
it did on the past few Saturday nights at Trikkx, I'll keep up the beats until
the music has to stop. I am usually moved by the response of the people on the
dance floor.
So here's a list
of my favorites, (and the format I have them in):
Deborah Cox - "Easy as Life" (As Performed by
Deborah in AIDA on Broadway in New York City, Music Remix, Video Remix Edit)
Reina - "No One's Gonna Change You" (Music Remix)
The Mama's and the
Papa's - "California Dreaming" (I have 2 different video versions, the
original music, and of course several dance remakes). I actually mixed the
original video into the video remix by the Royal Gigolos - just don't don't ask
me to do it again. I did the same with Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night",
and Tiga's version.
Through the years, I
have enjoyed music by the Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, U2, as well as high-energy
(Euro Style) dance, jazz, and pop standards (Billie Holiday, Streisand, Linda
Eder to name a few). Carmen McRae's "Inside A Silent Tear" is stunning.
